X Factor finalist Rhydian Roberts, Welsh international tenor Dennis O’Neill and Gavin and Stacey actress Ruth Jones were among the stars who took part in a successful charity concert for Christian Aid’s Haiti earthquake appeal on Monday, 15 February.
The compere for the fundraising evening was the Welsh television presenter, Angharad Mair, with Ruth Jones introducing Rhydian, who pleased the audience by singing popular West End show numbers.
The two and half hour concert also included clips from a recent S4C programme on the earthquake as well as a personal reflection from Christian Aid Wales communication manager, Branwen Niclas, who has recently returned from Haiti.
The concert included a rousing version of Nessun Dorma by O’Neill. At the end of the show all the acts returned to stage, along with members of the cast of Pobl y Cwm, a popular Welsh soap, to sing ‘Dwylo dros y Môr’ (‘Hands Across the Sea’).
Other artists who took part were the opera singer Wynne Evans of the Go Compare TV adverts, Swansea based popular singer Mal Pope, and Rhondda choir Côr y Cwm.
Jeff Williams, head of Christian Aid Wales, said ‘It was such an enjoyable evening, yet we never lost sight of the reason why we were there. All the artists said how glad they were to be given the opportunity to do something for such a worthy cause.’
Concert organiser Gwawr Owen, who is the musical director of Côr Caerdydd - one of the choirs that took part in the event - said ‘there has been an amazing response to the concert, with everyone involved generous in their support.
‘Thanks to everyone who contributed, especially the star performers who were so willing to help Haiti. Hopefully we can raise even more money when the highlights are broadcast on S4C this Sunday evening.’
